what is baptism?
Baptism is a public statement about the sate of your heart: proclaiming outside what is happening inside. Baptism symbolizes your commitment to allow Jesus to the world, and each one is celebrated at Port City Community Church.
Baptism is an important part of following Jesus. Being baptized comes after you've accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior. It is a bold expression that you've been saved by grace, and an important one!
We get baptized to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
"At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan." Mark 1:9 (NIV)
We are baptized because we want to obey Christ.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
What does baptism mean?
It illustrates Christ's death and resurrection.
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NIV)
It illustrates your new life as a Christ follower.
“When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (TLB)
It identifies you with God's family.
“Some of us were Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ’s body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NLT)
Baptism doesn’t make you a believer– it shows that you already believe. Baptism doesn’t “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring– it’s the outward symbol of the commitment you've made in your heart.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
